Becoming An Okie Pt. 2- Bull Riding & Eating Steak

I previously blogged about my first impressions of Oklahoma.  As a new "Okie" I am working hard to explore and experience all this state has to offer.  This past weekend I went to PBR- my first time watching bull riding.  It was fun!  I don't understand how those guys can stay on those angry bulls for 8 wholes seconds and then WALK!

The next day I went to "Cattlemens" with some friends.  It was cheaper than I thought it would be for a steakhouse.  I'm not a big red meat eater, but the filet mignon was a great treat!  Boy, was I full!

Can't wait to explore some more.  If you have any more suggestions, please send me an e-mail at emily.sutton@kfor.com!

Is it worth it?

Am I the last person who hasn’t seen Avatar?  Is it really worth $13 to see it in 3-D?

Heart Blog

February is my favorite month! Because it is Heart Month, ofcourse. It is a month that is dedicated to bringing awareness to the nation's number one killer, heart disease.

I have been given the honor of serving as the local American Heart Association's spokesperson. Here is my survivor story...

When I was two, I was diagnosed with a heart defect known as Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). An ASD is a hole in the septum of the heart, between the heart's two upper chambers known as the atria. Now, everyone is born with an opening in the atria, allowing blood to move away from the lungs before birth. After the baby is born, the opening is no longer necessary and typically closes. Needless to say, mine didn't close. This hole was allowing oxygen-rich blood to leak from my heart's left side back to the right side, pumping back to the lungs - creating more work for the right side of the heart. My poor little heart was working much harder than necessary and could have lead to heart failure.

Luckily, my defect was found and I had open-heart surgery to repair the hole when I was nine. I am completely healthy now and am able to participate in activities that I would have never been able to. I was an All-State cross country runner, an All-American cheerleader, and I still practice heart-healthy living. I consider myself very lucky and want to pass on the heart-health knowledge! I mean, heart disease is the NUMBER ONE killer among women... Who knew? Now you do!

Friday, February 5, is National "Wear Red" day. So I hope everyone will participate, and send in pics of your red ensemble. If you would like to donate, volunteer, participate, or just learn more about heart health, visit the American Heart Association's website at americanheart.org, or email us at rise&shine@43thespot.com. Email us your survivor story! We'd love to hear.

Whichwich

As a longtime sandwich aficionado, (i.e. Olive loaf, avocado, capers and Mayo) I had a nice experience at Whichwich in Edmond. The bread was kinda different and it’s fun to build you’re your sandwhich with a pencil on a paper bag which they read to make you sandwich.

Fast, friendly, fun and good Iced tea.

Don’t worry Subway…I won’t give up my BMT…but it was a nice change!

Super Sooner

Congratulations to former Sooner kicker Garrett Hartley for doing something we’ve never seen before.  His overtime field goal sent the New Orleans Saints to the Super Bowl!  It’s great to see a player from our state do something historic.  Congrats Garrett!

Baptism By Fire...Or Snow?

I'm a new Okie. Many people ask me about my first impressions of this area and how I like it so far. I moved to Oklahoma about the second week in December. At that time, a strong cold front had just passed through and Oklahoma was experiencing the coldest temperatures of the season with wind chills in the single digits/teens. So, my first impression was "Wow! I didn't know Oklahoma got this cold and WINDY." During my first weathercasts I wanted to put "breezy" each day and quickly adjusted to the Oklahoma standard of wind. But I'd have to say that the best part of Oklahoma so far is the people. Okies regularly dish out southern hospitality and are always willing to lend a hand. After viewing the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial and museum, I realized how Oklahoma has a history of coming together in the face of chaos. I encountered that several times during the historic Christmas Eve blizzard, only a few weeks after starting on air here. I guess you could call it "baptism by fire." After nearly 8 hours of live shots out in the freezing rain, sleet, and blinding snow, my photographer and I accidentally locked ourselves out of the live van. A viewer heard this over the radio and invited us to stay warm in his car until help arrived. On our way back to the station, we saw several people helping others stuck in the snow. Nearly a dozen of us spent the night at the station. Although expired easy mac dinner and stiff love seat as a bed wasn't how I pictured spending my Christmas Eve, I felt blessed to be safe inside and warm. Many people were stuck on the highways with no food or blankets. A random family graciously housed one of our photographers, Marc Dillard for the night. This is just a handful of heroic stories from the Blizzard of 2009. When I'm surrounded by great people like this...how could I not like Oklahoma?

Go Red!! Why not?

So if you have been watching Rise & Shine the past couple of days (which I know EVERYONE has) you probably have noticed a slight change... My hair is RED!

I catch a lot of responses to my hair, DAILY. It seems it's always a topic of discussion for some reason, so needless to say I have received several emails about the new look, so I thought I should address this very important issue: Why red?

Well, I say, "Why not?!" I think red fits my personality... a little fiery, ginger, and different! I thought it would be fun to change things up a bit. Change is always fun. I've been blonde for a very long time, and hey I can always change it back if I grow to hate it... But I happen to like it.

Not to mention, the hair salon I go to is fabulous! I mean, this place really gives you 'the treatment.' Hand/arm massages, your choice of wine/water, VERY professional. So anytime I have a chance to visit, I take full advantage!

So thank you to everyone who cares about my hair! I appreciate your concern and the positive feedback. You guys are great and thanks for watching R&S :)

Strange Gifts

I think Christmas is far enough behind us to blog about this... what's the strangest gift you received for Christmas?  I have to say, my husband typically gets me great gifts.  However, this year there was one gift which stood out above all the rest.  This picture is of the towel holder I opened on Christmas morning.  I really didn't know how to react.  He seemed proud of himself, while I was in shock.  I didn't know if he was serious or if I was supposed to laugh.  I still really don't know.
Now it's your turn.  Share with us the strangest gift you got this past Christmas.  What did you do with it?  How did you react?

It's Good To Be Back

Hello KFOR Friends!!
Well, after a 12 week break I'm back.  I've been gone on maternity leave since the end of October... all for this little guy in the picture.  Who knew having a baby when I did would be so great!! I missed the blizzard and the artic blast!! If you watch the morning show you know I would have been standing out there in the snow and freezing temperatures.  Fortunately, I was sitting on my couch at home.  Let's just hope that's the last of the crazy weather for this year (although saying that has likely just cursed me)!

Super Bowl for AD?

Wondering if Adrian Peterson is going to get a ring this year!  I respect Peyton Manning, but next week’s NFC Championship game between the Vikings and Saints is the “real” Super Bowl.

Oklahoma feels for Haiti

As I am sure we have all seen, Haiti, one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but also the poorest nation in the hemisphere, is really struggling. The rest of the World can see the carnage, but this pain is all too familiar to Oklahomans. Almost 15 years ago, the World rushed to Oklahoma's aid on April 19, 1995.

Now, in Haiti the attacker was Mother Nature. Here in Oklahoma, it was a planned attack, a terrorist attack.

But circumstances for the devastation aside, the effects are still the same; heartache, anger, despair.

Hours and days after the terrorist attack, families scrambled to find their loved ones. Are they okay? Were they in the building? Has anyone seem them?

Now Haiti is experiencing the same, only on a largely multiplied level.

In the bombing, 168 people died. In Haiti, it could be about 100,000 lives lost.

In the search effort, Haiti has one resource Oklahoma did not have, the internet. Yes, the world wide web was around at that time, but was not being used as it is in catastrophe.

Major outlets like CNN and even the RED Cross have set up sites to help you find your missing family and friends.

Both sites allow you to upload pictures, leave updates and find other means of contact.

During the Oklahoma City bombing and even the attacks on the World Trade Centers, this technology was not at the public's disposal.

Vietnam was the first war to be televised; it brought the barbaric acts right into viewers' living rooms.

In 1995, people anxiously waited by their phones in hopes of hearing a loved one's voice on the other end.

Years later for the Twin Towers in 2001, family members held tight to their cell phones while compulsively checking e-mail for a sign their friends were okay.

Now, in 2010, anyone and everyone with access to the internet can check or send the status of those involved in or affected by this tragedy.

The excruciating wait time is reduced; updates are instantaneous and available to all.

Technology has made another leap to help those in need, aid in research and bring the World as a whole, closer together.

Test Blog for 43 the Spot

We are starting up a new thing with 43 The Spot as well as News Channel 4. Hopefully, everyone from talent to production will contribute to this blog. Maybe they will write a movie review or mention a new trend they see forming. They could even write a rant or a rave, but not endorse local restaurants or anything like that. We will see how it goes.
